Bowel Cancer: Know the Signs & Get Screened

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, but early detection saves lives. Over 90% of cases can be treated successfully if caught early. That’s why it’s important to know the symptoms and take part in the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms of bowel cancer can be subtle, but if you notice any of the following, speak to your GP:
Persistent change in bowel habits (looser stools, constipation, or going more often)
Blood in your poo (especially without other causes like piles)
Unexplained weight loss
Abdominal pain or bloating after eating
Feeling tired for no reason

Bowel Cancer Screening in the UK & Spread Awareness

The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme offers a simple, free home test (FIT test) to detect hidden blood in your poo. Screening is available for:
Ages 54–74 every 2 years. It will soon be offered to everyone aged 50 to 74, so you may be sent a home test kit now if you’re aged 50 or over.
Ages 75 or over, but you need to call the bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 6060 and ask for the test.

Taking the test can help detect cancer early, even before symptoms appear. Learn more in the Bowel Cancer Screening Poster
